Traditional methods of detection of damage in the energy sector include chip detectors for gas turbines and vibration monitoring and oil analysis for other equipment. Industry experience over many decades have shown that these approaches are known to result in occurrences, on some equipment, of missed indications causing unplanned shutdowns and/or false indications resulting in needless operational interruptions.
Recognizing these deficiencies, twenty years ago, Gastops undertook the development of a game-changer product that would apply new technology to eliminate these occurrences of missed indications and false positives. Gastops’ approach is the MetalSCAN on-line oil debris monitor which was developed, qualified, and certified for gas turbine and wind turbine applications, providing the capability to detect and quantify early bearing and gear damage in real-time such that appropriate maintenance action would be triggered at the next convenient inspection.
MetalSCAN was developed so as to be available from the factory fitted directly to the equipment by the OEM or easily retrofitted in the field with installation kits specifically designed for each popular gas turbine or wind turbine model, without major modification to the equipment systems and in a very short shut down period.
Putting this tool in the hands of maintainers, the decision to operate or do maintenance is no longer subjective, is made more quickly, and more accurately, reducing the cost of operations and improving safety for all.
