Torque is the most critical parameter used to determine the performance condition of a prime mover – gas turbine, diesel, or motor – or driven device – compressor, pump, propulsor, extruder, roller, or generator.

Torque is commonly measured using strain gages mounted to the rotating shaft connecting the prime mover and driver device. This technique is usually limited to short duration development testing due to inherent long term reliability challenges. A more reliable approach to measure torque is using the shaft deflection/phase displacement technique whereby the torsional twist of a shaft is measured over a set length using toothed wheels at either end. This method is mature, accurate, reliable, and robust.
