During ground testing it is common practice to inspect the lubrication system chip detectors and filters for signs of early damage as well as to confirm that the engine or transmission released to the customer is “clean” and in the required serviceable state.

These inspections can range from purely visual to expensive chip and filter debris analyses performed in a laboratory.

In cases where inspections are purely visual, organizations may be risking releasing an engine that may have excessive build debris thereby causing false chip detector indications once put in service or possibly releasing an engine or transmission that may include an assembly error. Alternatively, in the case where inspection through laboratory analysis is already performed, there may be opportunity to improve the process to reduce the turnaround time and high laboratory analysis costs associated with releasing an engine or transmission to the customer.
