Did you know?

That the rate of propagation of a rolling element bearing spall accelerates rapidly when spall length increases beyond one roller spacing and that the size of metallic particles liberated into lubricating oil during a spall event is 100 - 1500 microns.

Marine Propulsion Pods

The marine industry utilizes podded propulsion systems where there is a requirement for high manoeuvrability and compact packaging, particularly on large cruise line vessels. As is often the case with new technology, these podded vessels have experienced reliability problems resulting from damage to the main roller bearings which support the propeller shaft and propulsion motor.

MetalSCAN has provided an effective health monitoring solution for this application and is now fitted to the majority of large propulsion pods currently in service on cruise vessels world-wide.

MetalSCAN has demonstrated to cruise vessel operators that it detects the onset of damage and tracks the progression of this damage over a period of several months before dry-docking is required, and well in advance of an actual failure. The vessels fitted with MetalSCAN are able to avoid unplanned breakdowns and  often schedule bearing repairs during planned dry-docks.
